Why Lithium-Iron Phosphate is replacing traditional storage in Vizag.

Why Lithium-Iron Phosphate is replacing traditional storage in Vizag.

Safety, longevity, and thermal stability are driving the shift in battery chemistry. For coastal cities like Visakhapatnam, the choice of storage technology isn’t just about performance — it’s about survival.

The humid, coastal climate of Visakhapatnam presents unique challenges for energy storage. Ambient temperatures routinely exceed 38°C during summer months, and relative humidity can hover above 85% for weeks at a time. Traditional Lead-Acid batteries degrade rapidly under these conditions, losing up to 30% of their rated capacity within the first three years.

NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) chemistries, while offering higher energy density, pose thermal runaway risks that are amplified in hot climates. A single cell failure can cascade into a thermal event — an unacceptable risk for residential installations where the battery bank sits metres from living spaces.

The LFP Advantage

LiFePO4 (LFP) batteries offer a 10-year lifespan with minimal degradation, typically retaining over 80% capacity after 6,000 full charge-discharge cycles. More importantly, their olivine crystal structure is inherently resistant to thermal runaway. Even under abuse conditions — overcharging, puncture, or extreme heat — LFP cells do not produce the violent exothermic reactions associated with cobalt-based chemistries.

The trade-off is energy density: LFP packs are roughly 20% heavier than equivalent NMC systems. For stationary residential and commercial applications, this is irrelevant. Nobody is carrying their home battery. What matters is safety, cycle life, and total cost of ownership — and on all three metrics, LFP wins decisively.

Our Transition to 100% LFP

Incremus has transitioned to 100% LFP storage solutions for all new installations as of Q3 2024. Every battery bank we deploy comes with integrated Battery Management Systems (BMS) featuring cell-level temperature monitoring, automatic balancing, and cloud-connected diagnostics. Our clients can monitor their storage health from anywhere, and our engineering team receives alerts before problems become failures.

The result is a storage solution that we can confidently warrant for 10 years — a commitment that would be commercially reckless with any other chemistry in this climate.
