PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana — what every homeowner should know.

PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is the central government’s national rooftop solar scheme — and for most homeowners in Andhra Pradesh, it is the single biggest reason solar now pays for itself faster than ever before.
Launched by the Government of India in February 2024, the scheme aims to bring rooftop solar to one crore households across the country. Its promise is simple: generate your own clean power, receive a direct subsidy on the cost of installation, and bring down — or even eliminate — your monthly electricity bill.
Free electricity, up to a point
The headline benefit is up to 300 units of free electricity per month for participating households. A correctly sized rooftop system generates enough power during the day to cover a typical home’s consumption, while net metering credits the surplus you export back to the grid against the units you draw at night.
How the subsidy is structured
Under the scheme, residential consumers receive Central Financial Assistance based on system size. As published by the government, the structure is approximately ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW, an additional ₹18,000 for the third kW, and an overall cap of ₹78,000 for systems of 3 kW and above. In practice this means a 1 kW system attracts around ₹30,000, a 2 kW system around ₹60,000, and a 3 kW or larger system the maximum ₹78,000.
These figures are set by the central government and can be revised over time. We always recommend confirming the current subsidy amounts on the official national portal, pmsuryaghar.gov.in, before finalising your system size.
Who is eligible
The subsidy is available to residential consumers with a valid electricity connection and a rooftop suitable for solar. The installation must be carried out through a vendor registered with your local distribution company (DISCOM), and the system must be net-metered and inspected before the subsidy is released directly to your bank account.
